MRA Banquet biggest ever
Photo by Bryan Huff The staff of The McNairy County News proudly display their Small Business of the Year award at Saturday night’s banquet.
The Annual McNairy County Regional Alliance Banquet was held last Saturday night at the Pickwick Inn with the largest crowd ever, in attendance.
The banquet used to be held in local school cafeterias with only 50 or so in attendance, but due to the outstanding work in promoting and coordinating the event it has grown to the point where there is no place large enough to hold it now.
“The economy is still suffering, but there are many positives to celebrate here in McNairy County,” said Russell Ingle, Director of Chamber Programs.
Guests were able to enjoy a “meet and greet” time prior to the banquet and bid on silent auction items. They then enjoyed a delicious meal.
Awards were presented to numerous businesses and individuals and guests then enjoyed entertainment by comedian Jeff Allen.
In his closing remarks, MRA Director Ted Moore thanked everyone for attending and noted many of the positive things going on in McNairy County including the County’s recent 31st straight Three-Star Award and tourism increase.
Ten Commandments on Display
Photo by Tom EvansSelmer First Baptist Church has erected a monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments.
The First Baptist Church in Selmer recently erected a monument in front of their church inscribed with the Ten Commandments.
Their monument is a welcome sign in these days of troubled times where people’s morals have declined, crime and drugs seem to be ever increasing, and everywhere you look certain groups are trying to take prayer and God out of people’s lives.
A group of men in the church, who pray together weekly, came up with idea to erect the Ten Commandment Monument. The funds were donated by individuals and did not come from the church’s budget. Joel Littlejohn of Littlejohn Monuments and Signs erected the monument.
The Ten Commandments are a set of biblical principles relating to ethics and worship, which play a fundamental role in most forms of Christianity. They include instructions to worship only God and to keep the Sabbath, and prohibitions against idolatry, blasphemy, murder, theft, and adultery. Different groups follow slightly different traditions for interpreting and numbering them.
The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Hebrew Bible, in the books of Exodus and Deuteronomy. According to the story in Exodus, God inscribed them on two stone tablets, which he gave to Moses on Mount Sinai.
Great job Selmer First Baptist Church!

Unwanted prescriptions drop off box
Photo by Tom EvansInvestigator Brad Johnson of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office displays the new drop off box for unwanted prescription drugs.
The McNairy County Sheriff’s Department now has a drop off box located in the Justice Complex lobby for those wanting to do away with outdated, unwanted, or unused prescriptions.
“This is a way for people wanting to do away with their old prescriptions to get rid of them safely without throwing them in the garbage or flushing them down the toilet,” said Investigator Brad Johnson. “It’s never a good idea to keep unused prescriptions around the house where they might be found by kids or fall into the wrong hands and if you flush them down the toilet they could eventually contaminate the groundwater. We will take them and get rid of them the same way we get rid of evidence once it’s no longer useful.”
Investigator Johnson asks those bringing in old prescription medicine to place liquids in a plastic bag before depositing. If you have questions or need more information, contact the Sheriff’s Department at 645-1004.
