Former mayor re-elected to serve town again following 2025 election
John Smith will be taking a familiar seat in January.
As of press time on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4, 2025, the unofficial results from the McNairy County Administrator of Elections Office indicates challenger and former mayor Smith will be declared the victor in the Town of Selmer’s 2025 Mayoral Race with 448 votes (or 61.71 percent) cast in his favor.
During a newspaper-sponsored debate held last month, Smith emphasized teamwork with the board and open communication with residents while saying his “track record as mayor speaks for itself.” The former and now newly re-elected mayor framed his campaign as a return to proven leadership and fiscal discipline, stating he would prioritize restoring balanced budgets and improving transparency while pursuing industrial development and infrastructure upgrades similar to those completed during his tenure, specifically mentioning 41 miles of paved roads and LED streetlight upgrades. Smith said, if elected, would be “not about me, but about we,” and called for a renewed focus on community trust.
With regards to the three open seats on the Selmer board, Johnnie Kay Witt was declared the winner of the available two-year position as alderwoman after receiving 310 votes (or 45.52 percent). Candidate Larry “Tomahawk” Tomaszewski finished with 227 votes (33.3 percent) and Elizabeth Woolbright ended the election with 137 votes (20.12 percent).
A full story with final results from the Town of Selmer 2025 Election will be presented in next week’s issue (Volume 18, Number 5) of the McNairy County News.
